When I visited the Boeing facility in December, the company was going through a rough patch. The two 737 MAXs that crashed in 2018 and 2019, killing all their occupants, were brought down by the same faulty sensor: it kept telling the flight-control software to tilt the plane’s nose down. The cabin pressure dropped so quickly that a fifteen-year-old boy had his shirt ripped off his back. It was later found that the panel was missing four bolts that should have kept it in place.
